Exploring High Tatras - Aug 2017

Exploring the High Tatras – Slovakia (Aug 2017)

Exploring the High Tatras  Mountain-biking in the Tatras – Too enthusiastic to take on the downhill part, we didn’t pay attention to the disappearing light, soon we were biking in an ever getting darker environment. A shadow was moving in the dark just about 100m in front of us. Our adrenaline level was rising and we focused hard to make out the contours of this creature. We whispered “Could it be another bear?” After the great success in April, I returned to Slovakia. This time to explore more of the High Tatras, as some of these trails are only … Read more

Exploring Tatra Region-April 2017

Exploring the High Tatra Region (Slovakia – April 2017)

Exploring Nature in the Tatra Region, Slovakia (April 2017) April 2017 – I have been to Slovakia several times during winter (White Wilderness 2012-2017) and I figured out I haven’t seen Slovakia in spring or summer. During winter, the High Tatras are all covered in snow and inaccessible. In April (2017), I and a couple of friends explored the Tatra area around Poprad, Slovakia. During this trip, we visited the High Tatras, the Low Tatras, Slovak Paradise and Poloniny National Park. Although the High Tatras were still quite inaccessible, we had some great sightings and adventures, from early … Read more

Visiting Bieszczady Mountains (Poland)

This is Poland! How it began With a seven-headed strong team, we left Belgium in a mini-van. Our destination was Bieszczady National Park in Poland. Bieszczady region is part of the Carpathian Mountains and is found in the border area between Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine. We were all biologists/nature minded people, so our goal was to enjoy the nature and snow, and put some effort in seeing some of the local wildlife. We definitely succeeded in our mission… After driving all night (changing drivers obviously), we finally arrived in Bieszczady. We booked a couple of rooms in ‘Pensjonat Antos’, … Read more

Cape Town & surroundings

7. Moving between projects: Johannesburg – Cape Town – Stellenbosch – Cape Town ….

My plan My previous project ended in Johannesburg (South Africa), I had about a week to get to my next project in Namaqualand (Western South Africa). I took a Greyhound bus from Johannesburg to Cape Town. My next plan was visiting a friend in Stellenbosch. Against all recommendation, I took a train from Cape Town to Stellenbosch (Apparently, it’s not done as a ‘white guy’). So, I started off my journey very cautious and made my way to the railway station with all my belongings close to me. I had my large backpack on my back, a small one … Read more

Canadian Rockies: Yoho, Banff, Jasper, Kootenay, Kananaskis, Waterton, Glacier, Vancouver & more… After a month of fieldwork in eastern Canada, I took a flight the west, visiting The Canadian Rockies, a little bit of the U.S. and Vancouver. This story is back from 2010, but it was a great experience I want to share. I’ll focus on where I’ve been and what animals I’ve seen. Hopefully, I can inspire some people to go and visit this magnificent place. I was there from the beginning of August until September 15th 2010. I will start with a couple of tips: Book trips/campsites … Read more
