White Wilderness – Slovakia

White Wilderness header

In 2012 I participated in the White Wilderness Project from the Slovak Wildlife Society. This project focuses on snow tracking of mainly lynx and wolves, but also prey species.
Since 2013 (till 2017) I got the opportunity to go back as a staff member (Volunteer Team Leader) to share this nice experience with new volunteers. We are also collecting DNA samples (hairs, scat, urine, blood,…) for analysis. Furthermore I’m responsible for the pick up and drop off of the volunteers, safety talks, looking after the equipment, collecting data, arranging data entering on the computer, general welfare of the volunteers, … It was and is still a great experience!
In 2015, 2016, & 2017, I also was a staff member when a student group from Wolverhampton University came to Slovakia to get more experience in wildlife biology.

If you want to learn more about this project, check out the  White Wilderness project webpage.Interested in my experiences during the project: check out the blog section below.

White Wilderness 2015 – Slovakia

3 Days of Wolf Tracking During the field season of 2015, I was very lucky to track a lot of wolves. Basically, we stumbled up on wolf tracks during a transect. They were about 6 of them, which is fairly uncommon. The interesting part was that not only my group found evidence of a large pack, there were 2 other groups as well. We couldn't tell for sure if these ...

White Wilderness 2014 – Slovakia

Back to Slovakia as Volunteer Team Leader Once again I went back to Slovakia to do some winter tracking in the White Wilderness Project from the Slovak Wildlife Society (SWS). I picked out a couple of stories from the field. In general, it was another great year. I had to adjust some camera trap boxes, I got a nice present from some volunteers (my wolf head), followed wolf tracks and ...

Slovakia 2012: White Wilderness/Carpathian Wolf Watch

How I got to Slovakia After getting my degree as a Master of Science in Biology, I noticed I didn’t have that much field experience. So, I started wondering around the internet in search for opportunities. Soon enough I figured out most of the volunteer projects ask for a fee to participate. I kept searching for opportunities and at the same time, I got an e-mail in my University inbox ...
